Good to know

What is hematogen?

An iron source of animal origin, with roots going back to the late 19th century.

~30%of people lack iron
20–30%absorption rate of animal-origin iron
1 in 3people worldwide has anaemia

Hematogen (Greek Haematogenum – “blood-producing”, renewing) appeared as a food supplement in Switzerland: in 1890 Dr. Hommel created a mixture based on cattle blood. Since then hematogen has changed its form but improved its properties, enriched with vitamins.

Hematogen is an iron source of animal origin. When the body lacks iron, one feels tired and weak, concentration declines, vital processes slow down and productivity drops. According to the World Health Organization, about 30% of the population experiences a deficiency of this element.

Iron is one of the key components that enable biochemical reactions in cells and supply organs and tissues with oxygen. Oxygen reaches tissues via the blood protein haemoglobin, of which iron is one of the main constituents. The human body contains about 3–5 g of iron, more than two thirds of it in haemoglobin.

One form of iron deficiency is anaemia, when the number of red blood cells or the amount of haemoglobin drops and the body experiences oxygen starvation. Almost one in three people worldwide suffers from anaemia; it is more common in women and children – around 30% of children and about 50% of pregnant women have an iron deficiency.

The body does not produce iron itself – we get it from food. Iron of animal origin has a considerably higher absorption rate (about 20–30% is absorbed) compared with iron of plant origin, which is absorbed less. Vitamin C significantly improves absorption, which is why all Lithuanian hematogens are enriched with it.

The WHO and UNICEF recommend taking iron supplements. Hematogen is especially important for those at risk of iron-deficiency anaemia: growing children and teenagers, pregnant and breastfeeding women, athletes and active people, and the elderly.
